When they arrived back at the hotel, they learned the two officers of the Imperial Army Schnitzer had arranged for them to interview that afternoon had departed on urgent war business. As such, Ella and Oliver had no further obligations until the following morning. Schnitzer had other business to attend to, but Peters, their military liaison, would be on hand in the lobby should they need any assistance.
Having been under constant surveillance by Schnitzer, they hadnât had opportunity to speak in private since the train to Rotterdam. Under the pretense of exchanging notes for the zeppelin article, Ella and Oliver agreed to meet in the hotel café in one hour. But when they did, Peters followed them into the restaurant and took a seat at an adjacent table. And since the café was otherwise empty, Peters could hear every word they said.
âSay, Peters,â Oliver said. âI donât suppose you could get us a newspaper?â
âCertainly. Which one? Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung? Berliner Tageblatt? Vossische Zeitung?â
âAny of those will do. Thanks a million.â
As soon as Peters was out of earshot, Ella said, âDo you think Drake has any idea where we are?â
âThe London office of the Journal must know weâre here. That means Drake does too.â Oliver spooned sugar into the cup of coffee on the table in front of him. âNot that it really matters. Drake canât get us out of Germany.â
âWell, we canât stay here for the rest of the war.â
âRelax. Weâve only been here a day. Eventually theyâll run out of officers for us to interview. In the meantime, why not try and enjoy ourselves?â He poured milk into his cup and stirred. âThis hotelâs a hell of a lot nicer than the Three Nuns in London. Thatâs for sure. That place is a real dump. Say, how come you get to stay at the Savoy?â
âBecause Iâm paying for it myself.â
âThatâs right. I keep forgetting youâre a millionaire. Weâve been friends for over a week, and I havenât received a single lavish gift from you. What gives?â
âHow inconsiderate of me,â she said dryly. âI assumed your pal Bertie the Earl had already gifted you everything you desired.â
âI said heâs in line to be an earl.â
âRight. Well, when we get back to England, why donât you stay at his family castle if youâre so dissatisfied with your accommodations?â
âCanât.â Oliver shrugged. âTheir castleâs in Scotland. Iâm better off staying here.â
âWell, Iâm eager toââ
âPeters,â Oliver called out, cutting her off.
âThe Berliner Tageblatt was all I could find.â The young soldier approached the table and handed the newspaper to Oliver.
âThatâll do just fine. Thank you, Peters.â
âIâm eager to report from the front line, is all,â Ella said. It didnât matter if Peters overheard this part of the conversation. He would assume she was referring to the front line of the German army.
âAs am I,â Oliver said. âWhy, Iâm eager as all hell to get to the front line.â He wasnât, of course. Heâd made that much clear. âBut Schnitzerâs not a magician. The German army isnât allowing reporters on the battlefield.
